Coping without Copy-n-Paste

realistic portrait oil painting from imagination by Singapore artist Kelvin Lim

“OMG.. totally them!”

When I read the reaction, I wonder if anyone could understand my happiness – and relief! I was tasked to replace her smile with another photo’s, but it wasn’t easy: different lens, different angle, different lighting. No way I could simply “copy and paste”. I had to study the faces and feel my way along… I was literally painting blind.

It took several days before the painting “felt” right, and even longer before I had the courage to show it to the client.

The painting is gone now, delivered to happy people. Days dreaming of an ever evolving face, memories overwhelmed with a person I’ve never met. Why do I feel this way? Why can’t I just take it as a “job”?
